Local Area Networks

 

A LAN is a group of computers connected together in a computer lab or an office. An example of a LAN is the network of computers in the Computer Workshop Lab at OASES.

 

Common Types of LAN Technologies:

 

1.                  Ethernet Networks

2.                  Token Ring

3.                  FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface)

4.                  Wireless Networks

Wide Area Networks

 

The WAN connects geographically separated computers and networks. An example of a WAN connection is the modem and DSL (or telephone line) that you use to connect to the Internet.

 

Common Types of WAN Technologies:

 

1.                  DSL Networks

2.                  ISDN

3.                  Frame Relay

4.                  ATM
