History of The Internet

The Internet has its origins in work sponsored by the US Department of Defense (DoD). It was designed to interconnect computers of different makes, models, and operating systems to communicate across a network. In 1960 the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), working with industry, and universities started ARPANET from which the modern day Internet arose. The Internet is essentially a network of networks. The language of communication on the Internet is TCP/IP. TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol.
